Alarm Bells Ring as Mnangagwa Term Extension Bill Gets Attorney General’s Approval

Tinotenda Hove – A proposal that could dramatically reshape Zimbabwe’s political landscape and accelerate Zanu PF’s contested 2030 agenda has taken a decisive step forward after confirmation that a draft law to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s tenure is ready.


Attorney General Virginia Mabiza confirmed on Wednesday that the Bill, intended to allow Mnangagwa to remain in office beyond constitutionally prescribed limits, has already been drafted and is awaiting presentation to Cabinet before being introduced in Parliament later this year.


“There is no existing legal barrier to the implementation of the 2030 resolution. The drafting process has been completed,” Mabiza told the Daily News. “The Bill is now with the Minister of Justice, Ziyambi Ziyambi, who will take it through the necessary procedures, including Cabinet and Parliament.”


The revelation has provoked sharp backlash from opposition parties, who argue that extending Mnangagwa’s term would undermine constitutionalism and democratic principles.


“This is a blatant attempt to sidestep the Constitution and cling to power beyond lawful limits,” an opposition spokesperson said, calling for wide public consultation and rigorous legal examination of the proposed legislation.
