Tinotenda Hove – Controversial businessman and Zanu PF Central Committee member Kuda Tagwirei celebrated his 57th birthday on Thursday, prompting mixed reactions across the country given his controversial reputation and close ties to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

While some party loyalists and associates offered glowing tributes, critics argue that Tagwirei’s influence raises serious concerns about corruption and the entanglement of business with politics in Zimbabwe.

Cleopas Mukungunugwa posted celebratory messages on social media, writing: “Happy birthday, Dr. Tagwirei. May the Almighty continue to bless you with many more years filled with good health, wisdom, and prosperity.
May you continue serving our nation and offering valuable advice to our Supreme Leader, President E.D. Mnangagwa. Enjoy your birthday, Chitova @57!!”

Tagwirei himself shared a post on Facebook under the handle Vision 2030 Kuda Tagwirei, thanking supporters for the messages and reflecting on his journey.

However, observers note that Tagwirei’s birthday has reignited public debate over the disproportionate influence of politically connected businessmen in Zimbabwe.

Analysts argue that figures like Tagwirei benefit from state contracts and policies that are often opaque, raising questions about fairness, accountability, and governance.

“While celebrations are expected, it is impossible to ignore the larger picture,” said a political analyst who requested anonymity.
“Tagwirei is seen by many as a symbol of cronyism — a businessman whose fortunes are tied to his loyalty to the ruling party rather than transparent enterprise or merit.”

Critics on social media have also pointed out that his birthday posts highlight the cosy relationship between certain business elites and the President, which they argue undermines public trust in governance. “It is disturbing to see a man with questionable dealings celebrated as a national figure,” one Twitter user commented.

As Tagwirei marks 57, debates over his role in Zimbabwe’s political economy continue to polarise public opinion, reflecting growing frustration with the blurring of lines between business interests and political power in the country.
