Tinotenda Hove – A dispute over a US$1 debt has turned fatal in Masvingo after a 43-year-old man died following an alleged assault with his own crutches at a rural business centre.
Masvingo police confirmed the death of Taurai Deredzai, of Magenya Village under Chief Zimuto, and said one suspect is in custody while another remains at large.
“Investigations are ongoing into the death of Taurai Deredzai. We are appealing for information that may assist in locating Tedious Mupopa, who is wanted in connection with the matter,” Masvingo police said.
According to police, the incident began on 7 June 2026 when Deredzai was approached at Dure Business Centre by two brothers, Moses Mupopa, 22, and Tedious Mupopa, 20, of Magaya Village under Chief Makumbe, Buhera. The pair allegedly asked for mice on credit, which Deredzai supplied.
On 9 June at around 8:30 pm, the three met again at the same business centre. Police say Deredzai asked for his US$1 payment, sparking a heated argument.
During the altercation, Moses and Tedious allegedly grabbed Deredzai’s crutches and, together with a whip, used them to beat him.
Deredzai suffered severe injuries and was first attended to at a local clinic. His condition deteriorated and he was transferred to Masvingo Provincial Hospital on 11 June, where he later died.
Police subsequently arrested Moses Mupopa. Tedious Mupopa had not been apprehended at the time of reporting.
Anyone with information is urged to contact their nearest police station.
