Tinotenda Hove – The Action Democratic Movement (ADM) has accused the ZANU PF government of presiding over a massive deterioration in Zimbabweans’ livelihoods while allegedly seeking to prolong its stay in power beyond the current electoral cycle.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the opposition movement said the country’s worsening economic and social conditions were evidence that ZANU PF had abandoned the very electorate it claims gave it a mandate to govern.
“Let’s stand for a moment and reflect on the critical aspects of our nation. We have seen a massive collapse in livelihoods,” ADM said.

The party argued that the government’s decision to shift the next elections to 2030 was not simply an administrative development, but part of a broader strategy aimed at avoiding an electoral contest it believes ZANU PF could lose.

“There are several indicators that ZANU PF has abandoned the electorate whom they alleged elected them into office,” the movement said.

ADM went further, challenging the legitimacy of the government’s electoral mandate and alleging that the authorities were deliberately using legal and constitutional mechanisms to extend their tenure.

“The glaring truth is that the regime was not elected into office which explains why they have shifted elections to 2030,” the statement said.

According to the opposition movement, the proposed extension reflects a growing fear within the ruling establishment that it would struggle to retain power through a genuinely competitive election.

“The fundamental truth is that they know they can’t win any election in Zimbabwe hence the use of lawfare to extend their tenure beyond the elective period,” ADM said.

The accusations come amid continued political controversy over proposals linked to extending the current political arrangement, with opposition parties and civic groups warning that changes to the electoral timetable could undermine democratic accountability.

ADM called on its supporters and political leaders to remain focused as the dispute over Zimbabwe’s electoral future intensifies.
