Tinotenda Hove – Celebrations surrounding Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira’s latest accolade have triggered criticism amid growing accusations that ZANU PF leaders are using state recognition ceremonies as party propaganda platforms.

Speaking during a luncheon held at Urban Lifestyle Hotel in Masvingo last week, ZANU PF Masvingo Provincial Vice Chairman Trust Mugabe openly linked Chadzamira’s award to the ruling party’s political machinery rather than individual merit.

“The Minister is number one because of ZANU PF. The party positioned him, and the Head of State appointed him. So this award belongs to ZANU PF, and we are proud,” Mugabe said.

Critics say the remarks reinforce long-standing concerns that government offices are increasingly being treated as extensions of the ruling party, with public recognition being turned into partisan celebrations.

Mugabe praised Chadzamira’s leadership style and his so-called “open-door policy,” claiming it had helped drive development projects and improve service delivery across Masvingo Province.
However, some observers argue that ordinary residents continue to face deteriorating roads, unreliable water supplies and persistent economic hardships despite repeated claims of progress by provincial leaders.

The ZANU PF provincial leader further urged Chadzamira to maintain the province’s top ranking next year, declaring: “We want Masvingo to take first place again next year. Continue serving the people diligently.”

Political analysts say the statements expose how ruling party officials are eager to convert government performance assessments into political victories for ZANU PF ahead of future electoral contests.

Mugabe also insisted that Masvingo residents fully support Chadzamira’s vision and development agenda, although critics argue that many citizens remain frustrated by unemployment, poor service delivery and what they describe as widening gaps between political rhetoric and realities on the ground.

The event has since sparked debate over whether state functions and provincial achievements are being increasingly politicised to strengthen ZANU PF’s image rather than address pressing public concerns.
