By A Correspondent – Young people in Chilonga have taken a leading role in addressing a critical transport challenge in their community by mobilising local stakeholders to open a temporary access route while rehabilitation works on the Chilonga Causeway are underway.

The initiative, spearheaded by members of the Youth Empowerment and Skills Development Association (YESDA), reflects the growing commitment of young people to community service and local development. Working together with residents, traditional leaders, government officials, local businesses, and other community stakeholders, the youth contributed their time and effort to establish a temporary crossing and improve accessibility for affected communities.

The closure of the Chilonga Causeway has disrupted movement between Chilonga and Chiredzi Town, making it difficult for residents to access essential services such as health facilities, schools, government offices, financial institutions, and markets. The situation has also affected local businesses and increased transport costs for many families who rely on the route for their daily activities.

Recognising the impact of the disruption, young people in the area organised community support and engaged various stakeholders to find a practical interim solution. Their efforts have helped accelerate work on the temporary access route, providing relief to thousands of residents who depend on reliable transport links.

YESDA applauded the initiative as a clear demonstration of active citizenship and youth leadership in community development.

“Young people are not only beneficiaries of development, but important partners in shaping solutions to challenges affecting their communities,” said a YESDA representative. “The response from the youth in Chilonga shows what can be achieved when communities work together towards a common goal.”

The initiative has drawn support from across the community, with residents providing labour and local businesses contributing equipment and technical assistance to facilitate the opening of the route. The collaboration highlights the value of collective action in addressing local challenges and strengthening community resilience.

Beyond improving mobility, the temporary access route has become a symbol of community solidarity and shared responsibility. It demonstrates how local solutions can complement ongoing government efforts to rehabilitate critical infrastructure while ensuring that communities continue to access essential services.

YESDA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting youth participation in development initiatives across Masvingo Province and encouraged more young people to engage in volunteerism, community service, and local problem-solving efforts.
