Tinotenda Hove — The death of Ambassador Victor Matemadanda has triggered fresh questions and renewed political speculation, coming at a highly sensitive moment in Zimbabwe’s political landscape as debate intensifies around the proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 (CAB3).

Matemadanda passed away on Saturday night, with government spokesperson Nick Mangwana confirming the news on Sunday morning.

“Ambassador Victor Matemadanda passed away last night. This is a deeply saddening loss,” said Mangwana.

His death comes at a time of heightened tensions within ZANU PF, where divisions over constitutional changes and succession politics have become increasingly difficult to ignore. For some observers, the timing of his passing has inevitably drawn public attention, given the broader political uncertainty surrounding the ruling party.

Matemadanda, a liberation war veteran and former senior ZANU PF figure, served as Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Mozambique and Eswatini, representing President Emmerson Mnangagwa in key diplomatic assignments.
Mangwana said Matemadanda served the President with dedication, adding that he represented “His Excellency the President” faithfully during his tenure.

His passing has also revived memories of a troubling episode from a few years ago when Matemadanda publicly revealed he had allegedly been poisoned, an incident that sparked concern about factional battles and internal power struggles within political circles. Although he survived that ordeal, the episode added to the long-running discourse around political hostility and mistrust in Zimbabwe.

Condolence messages have poured in from across the political divide, but beyond the tributes lies a deeper reality: Matemadanda’s death marks the loss of a veteran politician whose career intersected with some of Zimbabwe’s most contentious political chapters.
