Tinotenda Hove – Hundreds of Zanu PF supporters brought parts of Masvingo City to a standstill on Monday afternoon after staging a march in support of the controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 3, causing significant traffic disruptions and frustration among motorists.

The demonstrators, chanting slogans backing the ruling party’s 2030 agenda, flooded major roads in the city centre, resulting in heavy congestion and delays for commuters and businesses alike.

The proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 3 has drawn widespread debate, as it seeks to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office beyond 2028. Critics argue the move undermines democratic principles, while supporters insist it ensures continuity and stability.

What has further fueled tensions is the apparent double standard in how demonstrations are handled. While opposition supporters are reportedly being blocked from marching, the Zanu PF procession proceeded under full police escort.

Motorists caught in the chaos expressed anger and frustration over the disruption.
“This is unfair. We are stuck in traffic for hours because of a political march we didn’t choose to be part of,” said one commuter.
Another driver fumed, “Why are they allowed to block roads like this while others are stopped from marching? The rules should apply equally to everyone.”

Others highlighted the economic impact of the delays, with one motorist saying, “Some of us have work to do and deadlines to meet. This kind of disruption affects our livelihoods.”

The incident has once again brought the contentious Constitutional Amendment Bill into the spotlight, raising concerns about public order, political freedoms, and equal treatment in the handling of demonstrations.
