Tinotenda Hove – Opposition leader Michael Makaza of the Freedom Fighters for Change (FFC) has strongly condemned the government’s ongoing housing demolition programme, describing it as “wickedness” that is leaving vulnerable families exposed during the cold winter season.

In a statement released on Thursday, Makaza said the demolitions were causing unnecessary suffering to ordinary Zimbabweans who are being forced to sleep without shelter after their homes were destroyed.

“I stand before you today with heavy hearts, speaking for families who woke up to cold winter nights without shelter because of ongoing house demolitions,” said Makaza.

He accused authorities of failing to protect citizens and ignoring the humanitarian crisis created by the demolitions.

“This must stop immediately. No government should leave its own people exposed to winter cold and rain without a roof over their heads. That is not development — it is total wickedness and a failure of responsibility,” he said.

Makaza argued that government should first provide alternative accommodation before carrying out any demolitions, warning that destroying homes without proper relocation plans was inhumane.

“If there must be demolitions, then accommodation must come first. Provide safe housing before you break down homes,” he said.
“Do not wait for winter or rainy season to destroy lives. The dignity and safety of Zimbabwean families cannot be an afterthought.”

The FFC leader called on authorities to show compassion and prioritize the welfare of citizens facing displacement.
“We are calling for compassion, planning, and justice. The people deserve better,” Makaza added.

He concluded the statement with his party’s slogan: “Freedom Fighters for Change! People Power, People Power! #WeMove with wisdom!”
