Public Anger Grows Over Recycled Promises in National Budget Consultations

Tinotenda Hove- Despite Parliament’s glowing claims of nationwide participation, Zimbabweans have reacted with growing frustration to what they see as another round of empty, recycled promises in the 2026 National Budget consultations.

In a brief statement released on Monday, the Parliament of Zimbabwe praised citizens for “actively participating in shaping the upcoming 2026 National Budget, expressing their hopes and priorities for a more inclusive and equitable future.” Yet for many, these consultations have become a predictable exercise that never produces meaningful change.

“We are tired of being used for publicity,” said a participant from Gweru. “They call us to meetings, we pour our hearts out, and then nothing changes. It’s the same script every year.”

Persons with disabilities reportedly demanded more funding for accessible education, while women and youth called for job creation and support for small businesses. But citizens say those appeals have been echoed for years with no action from the government.

“Every year, they promise empowerment, equality, and opportunity,” complained a women’s group leader from Masvingo. “But when the budget is passed, there’s nothing to show for it. It’s just talk.”

Stakeholders also urged the government to improve healthcare, infrastructure, and agriculture, yet skepticism remains widespread. “We have heard this for decades,” said a farmer from Mashonaland West. “Our clinics are still short of drugs, our roads are broken, and farming inputs are unaffordable. These consultations mean nothing if there’s no follow-through.”

While Parliament insists that the 2026 National Budget aims to “leave no one behind,” public sentiment suggests otherwise — citizens feel left out, unheard, and disillusioned by a process that seems designed more for optics than for impact.
