Tinotenda Hove- President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa on Saturday presented a brand new Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series to Johane The 5th of Africa International Church leader, Archbishop Dr Andby Makururu.
The handover was announced in a statement by ZANU PF online activist Cleopas Mukungunugwa.
“President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has handed over a brand new Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series to Johane the 5th of Africa International Church leader, Archbishop Dr Andby Makururu,” Mukungunugwa said.
The donation has reignited debate over the growing relationship between the church and politics in Zimbabwe.
Some observers raised concerns about the implications of such gifts.
“When the state starts giving cars to church leaders, where do we draw the line between the church and politics?” one commentator asked.
Another critic said, “This looks like a compromise. The church is supposed to speak truth to power, not receive gifts from it.”
Supporters however defended the gesture, saying it was an appreciation of the church’s role in society.
The Land Cruiser handover comes days after senior government officials attended the church’s 2026 Annual Conference at the Mvuma Shrine in the Midlands.
