Tinotenda Hove – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has paid tribute to the late national hero Brigadier General (Rtd) Jonathan Willie Hungwe, describing him as a courageous liberation fighter whose dedication to Zimbabwe will remain part of the country’s enduring legacy.
Speaking during the burial ceremony at National Heroes Acre on Friday, the President honoured Hungwe’s role in the liberation struggle and his service to the nation after independence.
Mnangagwa said the late national hero devoted his life to the country and called on Zimbabweans to continue working towards national development in his memory.
“Cde Hungwe sacrificed his life for our motherland. Let us continue to build the Zimbabwe we want. As the Second Republic, strengthen our resolve to develop, industrialise and modernise our motherland Zimbabwe,” said Mnangagwa.
The President highlighted the importance of unity and collective responsibility in advancing the country’s development agenda, noting that Zimbabwe is making progress in several key sectors of the economy.
“Zimbabwe is strengthening its development in the field of mining, tourism, manufacturing and agriculture. Let us implement collective efforts to deliver services and beneficiate products to empower our women and youths,” he said.
Mnangagwa further described Hungwe as a brave and disciplined leader whose contributions during the liberation struggle and in national service inspired many.
“His bravery, leadership and countless sacrifices inspired many who served alongside him. He will be remembered as a unifier and a decorated leader,” the President said.
The burial ceremony, attended by senior government officials, members of the security services and liberation war veterans, celebrated the life and legacy of Hungwe, who was declared a national hero in recognition of his service and commitment to Zimbabwe.
