Tinotenda Hove -Enigmatic businessman Wicknell Chivayo on Friday made headlines after personally awarding fire hero Sirizani Butau a brand-new Toyota Fortuner and USD 50 000 in recognition of his life-saving bravery.
Chivayo announced the gesture on social media, describing Butau as a “true hero” whose courage during a 2021 disaster exemplified humanity at its best.
In 2021, Butau risked his life to save passengers trapped in a fiery wreck along the Harare-Mutare highway following a fuel tanker accident involving over 50 000 litres of petrol. Flames engulfed the scene, and there was a real threat of an explosion. While many fled, Butau ran towards the fire, rescuing those trapped in the burning vehicle despite suffering severe burns and permanent scars.
“Today I woke up in a good mood and remembered a true hero, who lives amongst us,” Chivayo wrote. “A man whose courage and bravery showed the goodness of humanity is none other than Sirizani Butau.”
Butau’s heroism earned him the Gold Cross of Zimbabwe Award, the nation’s highest recognition of bravery, bestowed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Amai Mnangagwa. Chivayo’s gift comes in addition to this national recognition.
“As a small token of my appreciation for your unprecedented heroic sacrifice… you will collect a brand-new Toyota Fortuner 2.4d D4D and USD 50 000 in cash to invest in any business of your choice,” Chivayo said. “Your scars are medals of honour tattooed on your skin and a permanent reminder that love still lives among us.”
Chivayo encouraged Butau to consider using the funds to start a business, praising his courage as proof of his strength and resilience.
“True heroes are not born in comfort but are forged in fire,” Chivayo wrote. “The lesson for all of us is to love one another and act with compassion, as we are all children of God.”
Sirizani Butau’s extraordinary bravery continues to inspire Zimbabweans and the world, a shining example of humanity and selflessness in the face of danger.
