Tinotenda Hove – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Supreme Court Judge Justice Felicia Chatukuta, describing her as a distinguished jurist whose lifelong service strengthened Zimbabwe’s justice system.

In his condolence message, the President said he received the news of her passing “with profound sadness,” noting that Justice Chatukuta, who died on 22 November 2025 at the age of 63 due to cardiac arrest, was “a distinguished daughter of the nation and stalwart of the Zimbabwean judiciary.”

Justice Chatukuta’s legal career spanned four decades, beginning shortly after she earned her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Zimbabwe in 1985. Mnangagwa highlighted her early commitment as a young legal practitioner, stating that she “demonstrated her dedication to the learned profession through working as a Public Prosecutor and later as a part-time lecturer at her alma mater.”

She also served as director at the Legal Aid Directorate before being appointed a High Court judge on 29 August 2005. According to the President, these roles underscored her “dedication, honesty and commitment,” qualities that propelled her elevation to the judiciary.

Justice Chatukuta served with distinction for 16 years in the High Court before rising to the Supreme Court bench on 3 June 2021. Mnangagwa noted that the appointment recognised her “high professional and ethical standards of conduct, legal expertise and invaluable contribution to the justice delivery system in Zimbabwe.”

Despite her senior positions, the President said she remained humble and meticulous in her work. He added that her “demonstrated thoroughness in the execution of her duties” should inspire not only legal practitioners but all Zimbabweans.

Describing her death as “a significant loss to the Zimbabwean judiciary,” Mnangagwa said her legacy would continue to guide and motivate future generations.

“In recognition of her significant contribution to the Nation, I have directed that she be accorded a State Assisted funeral,” he stated.

The President extended condolences on behalf of ZANU PF, the Government, his family and himself, saying: “May the family take comfort in the knowledge that the entire nation of Zimbabwe joins them in mourning the late Justice Chatukuta. May her dear soul rest in eternal peace.”
