Tinotenda Hove – Veteran coach Luke Masomere has joined the recently launched Former Footballers and Coaches 4ED, sparking criticism from sports analysts and fans who say the move politicises football and risks undermining the integrity of the sport.

In video footage released on Thursday, Masomere publicly praised President Emmerson Mnangagwa, prompting backlash from observers who argue that football figures should remain neutral and focused on the game rather than political endorsements.

Masomere said: “I fully support President Mnangagwa’s vision and commend those who are working to advance his vision. Sports and leadership go hand in hand, and we must rally behind our national leadership.”

He also applauded key figures involved in the initiative, including Wicknell Chivayo, Scott Sakupwanya, Shepherd Chahwanda, Farai Jere, and Innocent Benza, for their funding and support of the group.

Critics argue that the formation of 4ED blurs the lines between sport and politics, raising concerns about whether Zimbabwean football is being used to project political influence.

One fan commented, “It’s disappointing to see respected coaches and former players openly backing a politician. Football should unite people, not divide them along political lines.”

Analysts warn that such overt political alignment could damage the reputation of football in Zimbabwe and alienate players, fans, and sponsors who do not share the same political views.

“When coaches start taking political stances publicly, it sends the wrong message to young players and the community,” said one sports commentator.

Despite the criticism, Masomere and the 4ED organisers insist that their initiative is aimed at national development and strengthening leadership, though many remain skeptical about the true motives behind the campaign.
