Harare – The Zimbabwean government has donated 20 Starlink kits to schools revealing plans for a nationwide rollout as part of a broader strategy to bridge the digital divide and accelerate progress toward Vision 2030.

Speaking at the handover ceremony held at St Aidan’s Primary School in Chitungwiza, Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Senator Charles Tawengwa revealed that the kits—donated under the Independence Legacy Projects—are just the first phase of a coordinated national distribution effort.

“These kits are a donation under the Independence Legacy Projects, a clear demonstration of His Excellency the President’s commitment to leaving no one and no place behind,” Sen Tawengwa said.

He confirmed that additional Starlink kits are expected to be rolled out to more schools across all provinces as the government systematically expands access to digital connectivity. While the initial handover took place in Chitungwiza—host of the Provincial Independence Celebrations on 18 April 2026—the distribution will be scaled nationally in the coming months.

“We live in a rapidly evolving world driven by technology, innovation and information. Access to the internet is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity,” Sen Tawengwa added. “Today, with the provision of these kits, we are opening a new chapter where our schools can stand shoulder to shoulder with the world.”

Under the national rollout, School Development Committees across the country are also being encouraged to complement government efforts by providing additional internet solutions within their own schools. The initiative directly supports the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) pillars of human capital development, innovation, and modern infrastructure.

Sen Tawengwa urged teachers to rise to the occasion: “The evolving education landscape demands digitally literate practitioners who can confidently harness technology to enhance the quality of learning. Let us give our children the highest quality education so they can actively contribute to making Zimbabwe a great nation.”

Speaking at the same event, Chitungwiza Mayoress, Her Worship, Rosaria Mangoma thanked government for the donation and said the kits will greatly improve ICT infrastructure within schools.

“This generous gesture will greatly enhance the learning process at our schools. ln a world driven by technology and connectivity, this is not just a donation, but an investment in the future of our children,” she said.

She said not only will the kits open doors to online learning but they will aid research and innovation.

“The kits will open doors for learners that they have in the past only dreamed of. Thank you for bridging the digital divide and ensuring that Chitungwiza is not left behind. It also serves as a reminder that we have to improve our own facilities including our lical libraries which also require internet connectivity,” said Mangoma.
