Tinotenda Hove – Families living at Matererini and Matapi Flats in Mbare, Harare, are once again battling a surge of bedbugs, commonly referred to as “tsikidzi,” as the pests resurface in the crowded residential blocks.
Occupants who spoke to H-Metro described nights without sleep as the insects continue to bite and spread. Many voiced anger at what they believe is a sluggish reaction from relevant authorities tasked with addressing public health concerns.
According to residents, the infestation is moving swiftly between rooms, affecting mattresses, blankets, clothes, and even sofas within the high-density flats. The cramped living conditions are said to be worsening the problem, allowing the bugs to multiply unchecked.
In an effort to contain the situation, some households have reportedly thrown away their mattresses and other furniture, hoping to prevent further spread. “We have had to dispose of our bedding because the problem is out of control,” one resident said.
Another tenant noted that the outbreak has intensified over the past few weeks, sparking concern that it could extend beyond the apartment blocks if urgent intervention is not taken.
The suburb previously faced a similar crisis in 2025, prompting the City of Harare to send fumigation teams to the affected buildings. However, residents now argue that the current resurgence appears worse than last year’s outbreak and are calling for immediate and comprehensive pest control measures.
