Tinotenda Hove – Opposition party Freedom Fighters for Change (FFC) has issued a strong statement demanding comprehensive electoral reforms ahead of Zimbabwe’s 2028 general elections, warning that recent moves to extend political terms are a blatant attempt to undermine democracy.

In the statement released on Saturday, the party said Zimbabweans “must stand together and demand change” to ensure that future elections reflect the true will of the people.

“Fellow Zimbabweans, as we stand at the threshold of the 2028 general elections, we demand change. We demand election reforms that reflect the will of the people, not the interests of a select few,” the party said.

The FFC condemned what it described as the “2030 extension,” calling it “a clear attempt to cling to power and undermine the democratic process.”

“We say NO to this nonsense,” the statement continued. “It’s time for electoral reforms that ensure transparent voter registration, equal access to media, an independent electoral commission, and secure voting systems.”

The opposition party outlined key areas requiring reform, including:

  • Transparent voter registration free from manipulation and bias
  • Equal access to media and campaign resources for all parties
  • An independent electoral commission insulated from political interference
  • Reliable and secure voting systems to prevent electoral fraud

FFC said Zimbabweans have lost confidence in the electoral process and that urgent reforms are necessary to restore public trust.

“We need reforms that restore trust in our electoral system and ensure that our votes count. The people of Zimbabwe deserve a government that serves their interests, not one that serves itself,” the party stated.

Declaring that time is running out, FFC vowed to keep pushing for accountability and transparency before the next polls.

“As the mouthpiece of the people, the Freedom Fighters for Change declare that we are running out of time. Reforms now! We will not be silenced. We will not be deterred,” the party emphasized.

The statement concluded with a rallying call for unity and decisive action:

“Join us in demanding electoral reforms that reflect the will of the people, an end to electoral manipulation and corruption, and a government that serves the people, not itself. The people have spoken: #WeMove for election reforms and justice. #FFC will not be silenced. Let’s unite for a better Zimbabwe. Reforms now!”
