By Fortunate Masikati- Allergic conjunctivitis is an eye condition caused by an allergic reaction to things like dust, pollen, smoke, perfume, or pet fur. It affects the conjunctiva — the thin membrane covering the white part of the eye.
Common signs and symptoms
Red eyes
Itchy eyes
Watery eyes
Burning sensation
Swollen eyelids
Stringy or watery discharge
Sensitivity to light sometimes
Common causes
Dust
Pollen
Smoke
Pet dander
Cosmetics or eye products
Strong perfumes
Management / Treatment
Avoid the allergen causing irritation
Do not rub the eyes
Use cold compresses
Artificial tears may help wash allergens away
Antihistamine or anti-allergy eye drops may be prescribed
Severe cases may need medication from a clinic or hospital
Prevention
Keep surroundings dust free
Wash hands often
Avoid sharing towels or eye cosmetics
Wear sunglasses outdoors during windy or pollen seasons
Seek medical attention if there is:
Severe pain
Loss of vision
Thick yellow/green discharge
Symptoms not improving after treatment
