By A Correspondent – In Masvingo, Zimbabwe, a grassroots transformation is taking root. The Young Farmers Group (YFG), a youth-led initiative launched by the Youth Empowerment and Skills Development Association (YESDA), is equipping a new generation to confront climate shocks and economic precarity through resilient, regenerative agriculture. YFG blends practical training with leadership development so young people can turn farming into a durable livelihood and a platform for community-wide climate justice.
YFG’s approach centres on four pillars. Climate Adaptation Training teaches drought-tolerant cropping systems and agroecological practices that conserve soil and water while lowering input costs. Technical Skills Development covers soil testing, organic composting, and use of simple digital farm-management tools to boost productivity and decision-making. Entrepreneurship and Market Access support participants to design viable agribusiness models, link to local value chains, and create steady income streams. Community Leadership builds capacities for advocacy, food-security planning, and peer-to-peer diffusion of sustainable practices.
Together, these elements create more than productive plots: they incubate local leaders who can scale climate-smart farming across villages, shifting perceptions of agriculture from subsistence survival to climate-resilient opportunity. In a region where weather patterns are increasingly unpredictable, YFG demonstrates that youth-centred, locally rooted solutions can strengthen household resilience, diversify incomes, and foster longer-term food security. In Masvingo, young farmers are not only growing crops — they are cultivating a fairer, more sustainable future.
