Tinotenda Hove – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has arrived in Eswatini for what officials are calling a “landmark double celebration,” but critics are already questioning the timing and relevance of the visit amid ongoing domestic challenges.

Mnangagwa is set to join regional leaders in festivities marking King Mswati III’s 40 years on the throne and his 58th birthday at Somhlolo National Stadium.

Mnangagwa arrived in Eswatini on Thursday evening…

While the event has been framed as a major regional gathering, detractors argue it highlights a growing disconnect between leadership priorities and pressing economic concerns back home.

Eyewitnesses described a high-level reception at King Mswati III International Airport, where Mnangagwa was welcomed by Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Eswatini, Victor Matemadanda, Eswatini Prime Minister Russell Dlamini, and senior security officials. However, some observers dismissed the elaborate reception as unnecessary pomp.

“This kind of extravagance sends the wrong message when citizens are struggling,” one regional analyst said. “Leaders seem more focused on ceremonial appearances than real solutions.”

The President was accompanied by a sizeable delegation, including Foreign Affairs Minister Amon Murwira and Chief Secretary Martin Rushwaya, raising further concerns about the cost and scale of the trip.

Critics also pointed to Mnangagwa’s previous visit to Eswatini, arguing that repeated attendance at such events reflects a pattern of symbolic engagements with little tangible benefit. “We keep seeing the same trips, the same speeches, but no meaningful outcomes,” a political commentator remarked.

Despite government efforts to portray the visit as strengthening regional ties, skeptics remain unconvinced, describing it as yet another example of leadership detached from the everyday realities facing ordinary Zimbabweans.
