Tinotenda Hove- Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana has claimed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is restoring the dignity of Zimbabweans, despite widespread concerns over the economic hardships confronting ordinary citizens.
Mangwana made the remarks on X on Wednesday, arguing that Zimbabweans living in the diaspora are now more confident about their national identity under Mnangagwa’s leadership.
“Truth be told, ED has restored our dignity as Zimbabweans. Those who once felt embarrassed to claim their heritage in the diaspora now hold their heads high,” Mangwana posted.
The comments come at a time when many Zimbabweans continue to grapple with a high cost of living, unemployment and currency instability, issues that have forced thousands to seek opportunities outside the country.
Mangwana, who serves as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, did not elaborate on what specific measures under President Mnangagwa’s administration have led to the restoration of dignity.
President Mnangagwa came to power in 2017 following the removal of the late former President Robert Mugabe, promising economic reforms and international re-engagement under the Second Republic.
Supporters of the administration often point to infrastructure development projects, including road rehabilitation and dam construction, as signs of progress.
However, critics and opposition figures argue that the economic situation for ordinary citizens remains difficult, with many still struggling to make ends meet.
Mangwana’s remarks have sparked debate on social media, with some users agreeing with his assessment while others questioned the claim in light of ongoing challenges facing citizens at home and abroad.
