Tinotenda Hove- The Action Democratic Movement (ADM) has challenged the Zimbabwean government’s priorities, arguing that greater attention should be given to improving the lives of ordinary citizens rather than expanding visible state security around political leaders.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the opposition party said Zimbabweans are increasingly concerned about the contrast between growing displays of state power and the worsening economic hardships facing millions of people.

“A government’s first duty is to protect its people, not to protect itself from its people,” the party said.

ADM said the growing security presence surrounding one political leader had sparked important national questions about whether government spending reflects the realities faced by ordinary citizens.

“Images of an ever-expanding security presence surrounding one political leader raise a difficult but necessary question: what message does this send to millions of Zimbabweans who wake up every morning facing unemployment, hunger, failing hospitals, overcrowded schools, and collapsing public services?” the statement read.

While acknowledging that senior government officials require protection, the party argued that excessive displays of security risk creating the perception that political interests are being prioritized over public welfare.

“Security is an essential function of every state. Those entrusted with high office deserve appropriate protection. However, when the visible expansion of state security exists alongside widespread poverty, citizens are justified in asking whether national priorities are aligned with their daily realities,” ADM said.

The party highlighted Zimbabwe’s economic challenges, including high unemployment, struggling public health institutions, deteriorating infrastructure and under-resourced schools, saying these difficulties continue to define the daily lives of many citizens.

“These are not merely economic statistics. They represent the everyday experience of ordinary Zimbabweans,” the statement said.

ADM further argued that government resources should be directed toward essential public services and economic recovery instead of what it described as unnecessary displays of political power.

“Every additional public dollar committed to excessive displays of power is a dollar that cannot be invested in classrooms, hospital wards, ambulances, irrigation schemes, clean water, agricultural support or employment creation.

National resources should first improve the quality of life of citizens before they enhance the comfort or prestige of political office,” the party said.

The movement also said the success of any administration should be judged by improvements in citizens’ lives rather than symbols of authority.

“The measure of successful leadership is not the size of its security detail, nor the number of luxury vehicles in a convoy. It is measured by the confidence of citizens, the strength of public institutions, the health of the economy, and the dignity with which ordinary families are able to live,” ADM said.

The party concluded by calling for greater investment in human development, transparency and accountability.

“Zimbabwe deserves a government that places human development before political symbolism. The nation’s greatest investment should not be in protecting power, but in protecting the hopes, opportunities and future of its citizens.”

ADM added that a nation’s strength should ultimately be judged by the wellbeing of its people.

“A country’s true strength is not demonstrated by how many people stand around one leader. It is demonstrated by how many citizens can stand on their own feet with dignity, opportunity and hope.”
