Statement in Remembrance and Reflection: Justice Delayed, Justice Denied

Today, the Action Democratic Movement remembers a Zimbabwean citizen whose life was tragically cut short during the violent attack on a legally sanctioned opposition gathering in Kwekwe on 27 February 2022.

At just 35 years of age, he was fatally stabbed with a spear and succumbed to his injuries upon admission to hospital. He left behind a grieving wife, an eight-year-old daughter, relatives, friends, and a nation that continues to search for answers. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and reaffirm that their loss is not forgotten.

More than four years have passed since this tragic event. Yet no individual has been successfully held accountable through a completed judicial process. Such delays raise profound concerns about the state of justice, accountability, and the equal protection of all citizens under the law.

A democratic society cannot flourish where victims wait indefinitely for closure and where serious acts of political violence remain unresolved. The strength of a nation is measured not by the power of those who govern, but by the ability of its institutions to uphold justice impartially, consistently, and without fear or favour.

As Zimbabwe continues to debate Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 (CAB3), this case serves as a sobering reminder of why constitutionalism matters. Before any discussion about extending political arrangements or altering the democratic framework of the Republic, the nation must first confront the unresolved questions of accountability that continue to burden our public life.

The legitimacy of governance rests upon public trust. Public trust is built through justice. Where justice is delayed, confidence in institutions is weakened. Where accountability is absent, impunity flourishes.

The Action Democratic Movement maintains that Zimbabwe’s future must be founded upon respect for the Constitution, the rule of law, democratic renewal through the ballot box, and equal justice for every citizen regardless of political affiliation.

As we remember this fallen Zimbabwean, we honour not only his memory but also the principle that every life matters and every victim deserves justice.

His family deserves answers.

The nation deserves accountability.

Zimbabwe deserves a future governed by constitutional integrity and democratic legitimacy.

We remember. We honour. We will not forget.
