By A Correspondent|Masvingo, Zimbabwe – In response to growing concerns over xenophobic violence in South Africa, Women Empowering Sustainable Environments (WESE) has launched a new initiative focused on safeguarding women, promoting inclusion, and supporting their reintegration into communities.

The meeting brought together women leaders, community representatives, and stakeholders to discuss the challenges faced by women who have experienced xenophobic violence, including displacement, loss of livelihoods, trauma, and social exclusion. Participants acknowledged that women and girls are often disproportionately affected during periods of violence and instability, making it essential to develop coordinated responses that uphold their dignity, rights, and wellbeing.

The session was facilitated by Programs Manager, Precious Rashirai, who guided discussions on the need for solidarity among African communities and the importance of creating safe spaces for women affected by xenophobia. She emphasised that discrimination and violence undermine regional unity and that women must be supported through psychosocial assistance, economic empowerment, legal protection, and community-based integration initiatives.

Participants also explored practical approaches to strengthening social cohesion, promoting peaceful coexistence, and ensuring that women returning from or living in South Africa can successfully reintegrate into their communities without stigma. The meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration between civil society organisations, governments, and local communities in addressing the root causes of xenophobia and protecting the rights of migrant women.

WESE reaffirmed its commitment to advancing women’s rights, promoting peace, and supporting initiatives that foster inclusion, equality, and sustainable communities across the region. The organisation called on all stakeholders to reject xenophobia and work together to build a society where every woman can live free from fear, discrimination, and violence.
