Tinotenda Hove – Zimbabwe is set to experience heavy rainfall exceeding 50 millimetres, accompanied by strong winds, thunder and lightning, starting tomorrow and continuing until Saturday, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has warned.
In an advisory, the MSD said the severe weather is being driven by warm, moist air linked to low-pressure systems located to the north and south of the country. The conditions are expected to trigger widespread thunderstorms across the country from Tuesday 20 to Saturday 24 January 2026.
“Warm moist air driven by a system of low pressures to the north and south of the country is expected to generate widespread thunderstorms, strong winds and frequent lightning across Zimbabwe from Tuesday 20 to Saturday 24 January 2026, with some areas likely to receive in excess of 50 mm of rainfall within 24 hours,” the MSD said.
The department warned that the anticipated rainfall significantly increases the risk of disasters in many parts of the country. “This significantly elevates the risk of flash floods, hazardous road conditions with reduced visibility, landslides and rockfalls, particularly in areas already saturated by ongoing rains,” reads the advisory.
Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant, especially in flood-prone areas, river basins and wetlands. Authorities also cautioned against the dangers posed by strong winds, falling trees, blown-off rooftops and lightning strikes.
The MSD advised people to seek shelter during thunderstorms and avoid risky behaviour. “When lightning flashes go inside a house or building, do not stand under a tree or next to a tall pole or object. During a storm, avoid the use of machinery, open vehicles like tractors. Avoid open areas, using taps or showers and do not go into flooded areas,” the department warned.
The public has been encouraged to follow regular weather updates from the MSD and guidance from the Department of Civil Protection as the situation develops.
