Tinotenda Hove – President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday paid tribute to Zimbabwe’s late nationalist icon Joshua Nkomo during the 394th Ordinary Session of the ZANU-PF Politburo, offering remarks that acknowledged Nkomo’s historical significance while raising questions among critics about the sincerity and depth of the tribute.

Speaking live from ZANU-PF Headquarters, Mnangagwa said the meeting coincided with the commemoration of the late national hero, widely known as “Father Zimbabwe,” and called on younger generations to draw inspiration from his legacy.

“This meeting coincides with the commemoration of our founding father, the late National Hero Cde Joshua Nyongolo Nkomo,” Mnangagwa said.

He stressed that Nkomo’s ideals should remain central to nation-building and the moral development of Zimbabwe’s youth.
“As we honour his legacy, we must ensure that the vision and ideals of Father Zimbabwe continue to inspire younger generations,” he said.

Mnangagwa further urged young people to embrace the values that Nkomo stood for, arguing that these principles should shape both personal character and national commitment.
“His values and principles should serve as a lasting guide, shaping their character, conduct, and commitment to building the nation,” he added.

While the President’s remarks praised Nkomo’s legacy, some observers argue that the brief tribute lacked the depth and substance expected for a figure whose contribution to Zimbabwe’s liberation and unity remains foundational to the country’s history.
