Tinotenda Hove- President Emmerson Mnangagwa has warned Zimbabwean diplomats against treating their foreign postings as opportunities for leisure, insisting that ambassadors and other representatives must demonstrate measurable results in the execution of their duties.
Addressing Zimbabwean diplomats in Harare on Monday, Mnangagwa delivered a stern message, declaring that serving in the diplomatic corps under his administration was not an opportunity for individuals to enjoy foreign lifestyles at the country’s expense.
“Under my Administration serving as diplomats is not ‘child’s-play’. Ndinoda madzimai nevarume vakatsunga, vakazvipira kushanda nesimba kuti nyika ibudirire. Avo vanofunga kuti varikuenda-kuholiday, bodo. Hamusi kuyenda kunze ikoko kunomwa mazambiringa. I demand results,” Mnangagwa said.
His remarks raised questions about the performance expectations facing Zimbabwe’s diplomatic missions, particularly at a time when the government continues to look to foreign engagement to attract investment, expand exports and secure international partnerships.
The President’s insistence on results also places renewed attention on whether Zimbabwe’s diplomatic network is translating official engagements, international meetings and overseas postings into tangible economic opportunities for the country.
Mnangagwa further emphasised the people-centred purpose of diplomacy, declaring: “Diplomacy exists for people.”
However, beyond the strong rhetoric and demands for commitment, the central issue remains the actual impact of Zimbabwe’s diplomatic engagements on ordinary citizens and the national economy.
For many Zimbabweans, the value of diplomacy will ultimately be measured not by speeches, overseas meetings or official declarations, but by tangible improvements in economic opportunities, investment, trade and the country’s international standing.
