Tinotenda Hove – Debate has been reignited within Zimbabwe’s political circles following claims presented at the weekend by Zanu PF-aligned social media activists, popularly known as Varakashi, that retired Lieutenant-General Engelbert Rugeje may be the most academically accomplished soldier on the African continent.

Rugeje, a former senior Zimbabwe National Army officer who later transitioned into politics, has long been known not only for his military background but also for an extensive academic profile that spans law, defence studies, business, ethics and corporate governance.

According to information circulated by Varakashi, Rugeje holds an impressive list of qualifications from internationally recognised institutions. These include a Master of Defence and Strategic Studies and a Master of Laws, both from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom. He is also said to have obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Harvard University, one of the world’s most prestigious business schools.

Further strengthening his academic standing, Rugeje reportedly earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Ethics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. In addition, he is said to have undertaken a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at Universiti Utara Malaysia, as of May 2018, reflecting continued engagement with academic research beyond doctoral level.

Beyond traditional university qualifications, Rugeje is also credited with a Professional Directorship qualification from the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB), highlighting exposure to corporate leadership and governance.

Supporters argue that this rare combination of high-level military experience and advanced academic training places Rugeje in a unique category, not only in Zimbabwe but across Africa. They say his profile challenges stereotypes that often separate soldiers from scholars, presenting instead a model of intellectual depth within the security sector.

While comparisons about who is “the most educated soldier in Africa” remain subjective and difficult to verify continent-wide, there is little doubt that Engelbert Rugeje’s academic résumé has drawn significant attention and admiration. The discussion has once again sparked broader debate on the role of education, ethics and strategic thinking in military and political leadership in Africa.
