Shock as police officer is shot dead by husband in Hopley murder-suicide attempt; sispect critical in hospital
HARARE – A 36 year old police officer was fatally shot in the head by her husband in Hopley on Sunday, in what appears to have been a murder-suicide attempt that left the suspect critically wounded, police have confirmed.
Sergeant Dzanwa Portia was allegedly shot once with a CZ pistol by her husband, Pharaoh Dombodzvuku, 52, on August 16, 2026, according to a statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
After shooting his wife, Dombodzvuku reportedly turned the same weapon on himself, firing a single shot to his head. He was rushed to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition under police guard.
Officers have since recovered the CZ pistol believed to have been used in the shooting.
The ZRP has confirmed that comprehensive investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
No further details have been released as forensic examinations and witness interviews continue.
Authorities have urged members of the public facing domestic disputes to seek help through established channels to prevent such tragedies.
