By A Correspondent – A domestic dispute in Mabelreign, Harare, escalated into violence after a man allegedly mistook a torn spice sachet for a used condom and assaulted his wife in a fit of drunken anger.

Simbarashe Muzanenhamo was arrested on Monday following an attack on his 23-year-old wife, Fungisai Mutsambi, while she was caring for their two-year-old twin boys at their home.
According to Simbarashe, who spoke to H-Metro, he had been drinking when the incident occurred and believed he had discovered evidence of infidelity.

“After being away for some time, I returned to find something that looked like a used condom in the car,” he said. “When I asked her about it, she responded disrespectfully, which only fuelled my anger. I was drunk, and I lashed out.”

Convinced his suspicions were justified, Simbarashe allegedly beat his wife repeatedly with a belt.

Fungisai later reported the matter to the police, leading to his arrest. Simbarashe, who works as an aide to a local traditional healer, has reportedly been urging his wife to withdraw the complaint.

However, Fungisai has refused, maintaining that she was attacked over a misunderstanding.

“My husband jumped to conclusions over a piece of paper torn from a spice sachet,” she said. “His anger overshadowed everything, and I was ruthlessly assaulted with his trouser belt all over my body.

“I did not cheat on him, as he claimed. We should be celebrating our two-year-old twins together, not dealing with this violence.”

The incident has once again drawn attention to the dangers of alcohol-fuelled domestic disputes, with authorities urging couples to seek peaceful conflict resolution rather than resorting to violence.
