Chitungwiza Hit and Run Driver Nabbed After Crash Kills Toddler, Injures Three

Chitungwiza — The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of a 40-year-old man following a fatal chain of events that began with a hit-and-run and culminated in a deadly crash at a residential property, leaving a two-year-old boy dead.

Forget Chamuzambara was taken into custody in connection with the incident that occurred on Chirambahuyo Road in Unit D, Chitungwiza on Monday, 3 February.

According to a ZRP statement, Chamuzambara, who was driving a Mazda 323, allegedly struck a 16-year-old girl who was walking on the roadside. Rather than stopping, the suspect allegedly fled the scene.

In the process of fleeing, police report that he lost control of the vehicle. The car careened off the road, crashing through the gate of a nearby house where it struck three people seated in the property: a 75-year-old woman and two children.

“The two-year-old boy died on the spot,” the ZRP statement confirmed. “The woman and the other child sustained severe head injuries.”

Emergency services attended the scene. The body of the deceased toddler was taken to Chitungwiza Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination. The three injured victims, including the initially struck teenager, the elderly woman, and the second child, were rushed to Chitungwiza Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Chamuzambara is now in police custody assisting with investigations. The ZRP has not yet indicated what formal charges he will face, but they are likely to be severe given the fatal consequences of the alleged actions.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Unit D community, highlighting grave concerns over road safety and hit-and-run offenses.
