Tinotenda Hove- ZANU PF Deputy Secretary for Youth Affairs John Paradza has sparked controversy after equating himself to John the Baptist as he pledged undying loyalty to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Paradza made the remarks during the third edition of Munhumutapa Day held in Mvurwi on Tuesday, September 15, as ZANU PF supporters gathered to celebrate the President’s birthday.

In a declaration directed at Mnangagwa, Paradza said:

“Pamunofira, ndopatinofira, His Excellency President Dr. Emmerson D. Mnangagwa” – meaning wherever you die, is where we will also die.

The Gutu West legislator then referred to himself as “John the Baptist,” suggesting his role in ZANU PF is to prepare the way for his political superiors, in the same way the biblical figure prepared the way for Jesus Christ.

The analogy immediately drew criticism from Christian audiences and on social media, with many accusing the Youth leader of blasphemy and political hero-worship.

The remarks also added to the broader debate around Munhumutapa Day itself, an event created to celebrate Mnangagwa’s birthday, which critics say reflects the growing use of state and party institutions to glorify the President.

Paradza’s loyalty pledge comes as ZANU PF continues to rally around Mnangagwa and his political agenda.
