By A Correspondent – Seven suspected armed robbers have been arrested following a daring robbery in Nyabira that ended with residents chasing down one of the suspects after a violent early morning raid.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the arrests on Wednesday after detectives launched investigations into the robbery that occurred on 5 May.
Police identified the suspects as Malvin Mohammed Maisiri (32), Leonard Mahwindo (26), Tension Mahwindo (26), Heavens Chimupenga (17), Moffat Mango (50), Kudakwashe Munemo (29) and Goodwill Muchimba (39).

According to national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the gang allegedly pounced on a Nyabira home at around 3AM, attacking the complainant while demanding cash and valuables before ransacking the house.

The homeowner reportedly raised alarm, attracting neighbours who rushed to the scene and caught the suspects still inside the property. The gang allegedly fled as residents descended on them, sparking a dramatic chase through the neighbourhood.

One suspect, identified as Mohammed Hamandishe, was eventually caught by residents before being handed over to police.
Officers recovered a Retay pistol, nine live rounds, four blank rounds and two pistol magazines at the scene.

Police say information obtained after the arrest led detectives to the remaining suspects during follow-up operations conducted in Nyabira and Chitungwiza.

Further searches reportedly led to the recovery of a Tokarev pistol loaded with one live round, a bolt cutter, a bicycle and other suspected robbery tools.

Authorities are also linking the gang to three other armed robbery incidents that took place in Nyabira on 26 April, where cash and household goods were stolen.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police commends the Nyabira community for their swift and courageous response, which led to the arrest of one of the suspects,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

Investigations are continuing, while police are appealing for information that could lead to the arrest of two outstanding suspects known only as “Good” and “Nyasha.”
