Tinotenda Hove- The National Progressive Democrats (NPD) has wished South Africa a peaceful and democratic election ahead of the country’s polls scheduled for 4 November.
In a statement issued on Thursday, NPD spokesperson Knowledge Mutyambizi said South Africa is home to millions of Zimbabweans who crossed the border in search of better opportunities.
“As South Africa prepares to go to the polls on 4 November, the National Progressive Democrats (NPD) wishes the people of South Africa a peaceful, free, and successful Election Day,” he said.
“South Africa is home to millions of Zimbabweans who have crossed the border in search of economic opportunities, security, and a better life. We commend South Africa for upholding the democratic right of political parties to campaign and engage citizens freely,” he said.
Mutyambizi said democratic principles are built on free participation and respect for the will of the people.
“A democracy is strengthened when political parties are free to campaign, citizens are free to choose, and the people’s will is respected,” he said.
He said Zimbabweans continue to be denied the same freedoms.
“Sadly, for millions of Zimbabweans, these freedoms remain a distant dream. Our people continue to yearn for an environment where political rights are protected, political competition is fair, and citizens can freely determine the future of their country without fear,” he said.
“The people of Zimbabwe deserve nothing less,” he added.
Mutyambizi said democracy and the right to choose leaders are fundamental rights.
“As the NPD, we believe that freedom, democracy, and the right to choose one’s leaders are not privileges reserved for a few nations. They are fundamental rights that every Zimbabwean must enjoy,” he said.
“Happy Polling Day, South Africa! May your elections strengthen democracy and inspire hope across our region. Zimbabwe, too, shall be free. The struggle for genuine democracy continues,” he said.
