Chiredzi — Nine people died on the spot and 25 others were injured this morning when a bus collided with a train at a level crossing in Chiredzi, the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has confirmed.

The accident occurred at 0700 hours as the train was travelling from Triangle to the NRZ Lundi siding.

According to NRZ Public Affairs and Stakeholder Relations Manager, Andrew Kunambura, the collision happened when the bus driver failed to observe level crossing regulations.

“The accident occurred when the driver of the bus failed to observe level crossing rules, which require drivers to stop and check for oncoming trains before proceeding,” Kunambura said in a statement.

The nine passengers who died include seven adults and two minors. The 25 injured passengers were rushed to hospital where they are receiving treatment.

Emergency services, including police, ambulances and the fire brigade, are on-site managing the active rescue operation.

“Our deepest thoughts and condolences go out to the families and loved ones affected by this tragic event,” the NRZ said. “We also wish speedy recovery to the injured passengers.”

The railway company urged all motorists to strictly observe level crossing regulations to avoid loss of lives and injuries.

“Further updates will be shared through our official channels as verified details emerge,” Kunambura added.

The accident comes as authorities continue to emphasize road safety, particularly at railway crossings where fatal collisions have occurred in the past. Investigations into the exact circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
