Tinotenda Hove- Zanu PF sources on Tuesday revealed that Zimbabwe’s 47th Independence celebrations will be held at Rutenga Growth Point in Mwenezi District on April 18, 2027, with the ruling party and government presenting the event as a platform to showcase a wide range of development projects.

According to the announcement, “The nation is proudly informed that the 47th Independence Celebrations will be held on 18 April 2027 at Rutenga Growth Point, Mwenezi District.”

The statement adds that the commemorations “will not only honor our freedom but also showcase legacy projects that uplift communities and secure the future.”

Among the projects highlighted are the completion of 13 stalled projects and 54 devolution projects, construction of a 16,000-seater stadium, 16 science laboratories, 39 satellite schools, solarised computer laboratories, rehabilitation of Liberation War heritage sites, 10 houses for veterans of the liberation struggle, and the establishment of a Youth Service and Vocational Training Centre.

The announcement also lists major roadworks, including the Rutenga-Boli-Sango Road, Nqundu-Tanganda Road, Rutenga-Zvishavane Road, and the completion of sections of the Masvingo-Beitbridge and Makwi-Neshuro roads.
Government further says it has drilled 105 boreholes, installed 40 pumps, established 50 solar-powered water schemes and maintained 1,500 boreholes as part of preparations linked to the celebrations.

The statement concludes: “This Independence Day is more than a celebration it’s a renewed commitment to development, unity, and empowerment.”

The announcement is expected to reignite debate over government priorities, with critics arguing that essential infrastructure, water, education and road projects should be delivered as part of routine public service rather than being prominently tied to high-profile national celebrations.

Others have also questioned whether such large-scale commitments will be fully implemented amid Zimbabwe’s continuing economic challenges.
