Tinotenda Hove – A sermon delivered by Vice President Gen (Retired) Constantino Chiwenga during a weekend church service has stirred political discussion in ruling party circles, with observers reading deeper meaning into his biblical references and tone.
Chiwenga, who drew from the story of King Hezekiah, reflected on themes of power, time and mortality in a way that some attendees interpreted as more than spiritual teaching. In his remarks, he is reported to have said, “When a leader is granted extra years, it is not always a blessing if wisdom to use that time is absent,” a line that quickly became the subject of political interpretation.
He further illustrated the narrative of a ruler who pleaded for more time, only to receive it without meaningful change in conduct, reportedly adding, “Power can be extended, but destiny is never negotiated indefinitely.” These statements, delivered in a reflective tone, have since been widely dissected in political conversations.
Within Zimbabwe’s charged political environment, such church appearances by senior figures are often scrutinised for hidden messaging. Analysts suggest the sermon’s themes have fuelled renewed speculation around internal positioning and succession dynamics within ZANU-PF, especially regarding long-term leadership questions.
For many observers, the address was not simply a religious reflection but another reminder of the delicate and often silent contest over influence, timing and eventual leadership transition at the highest levels of the party.
