By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has warned members of the public to be vigilant when responding to job advertisements circulated through social media, following a robbery and rape case allegedly linked to a fake employment opportunity in Kuwadzana.
In a statement issued on Monday, police said the incident occurred on September 14, 2026, involving a 27-year-old woman from Gokwe who had travelled to Harare after being offered a job by strangers through a WhatsApp group.
According to the police, the woman was instructed to travel to Kuwadzana after responding to the offer, where she was allegedly attacked by three men.
The suspects allegedly robbed her of her valuables before gang raping her.
The incident has prompted police to urge job seekers to exercise extreme caution when dealing with employment offers from people they have never met.
“The ZRP urges members of the public to exercise caution when responding to unsolicited job offers or engaging with strangers on social media,” police said.
The police also urged members of the public to establish the identities of people behind such offers before travelling to unfamiliar locations or meeting them in person.
Authorities further advised job seekers to verify both the identity and credentials of individuals claiming to represent companies or organisations.
Police said the case remains under investigation as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.
“The warning follows a robbery and rape incident that occurred in Kuwadzana on 14/09/26, involving a 27-year-old woman from Gokwe who had been offered a job by strangers through a WhatsApp group,” the ZRP said.
The case highlights the risks faced by desperate job seekers who may be vulnerable to criminals disguising themselves as recruiters, particularly on social media platforms where identities and employment claims can be difficult to verify.
Police said investigations were continuing and efforts were underway to bring the suspects to justice.
“Police are conducting comprehensive investigations to identify and apprehend the suspects,” the statement said.
The ZRP has urged members of the public to treat unsolicited employment offers with caution and to conduct proper checks before sharing personal information, travelling to meet supposed recruiters or accepting offers from unknown individuals.
