Tinotenda Hove- The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has been forced to admit that ZiG cash is not reaching the people, after rolling out yet another desperate system to try and fix the deepening cash crisis.
The central bank claims it is deploying a Cash Distribution and Availability System (CDAS) to monitor ZiG banknotes and coins across banking halls and ATMs, including rural and remote areas.
But critics say the move is a clear admission that the ZiG has failed to gain public confidence and is not available when citizens need it most.
“The system is expected to help the RBZ identify areas experiencing cash shortages, improve distribution and ensure that available ZiG cash reaches the public more efficiently,” the RBZ said.
For ordinary Zimbabweans, the announcement brings little comfort. Businesses continue to reject ZiG, ATMs remain empty, and people are still forced to rely on the US dollar for everyday transactions.
“The focus is shifting towards smarter cash management, wider accessibility and strengthening confidence in the use of the local currency,” the RBZ added.
However, many question how confidence can be restored when the local currency keeps losing value and cash remains scarce despite repeated promises from the authorities.
Instead of solving the root problem, the RBZ is once again accused of introducing fancy systems while citizens continue to suffer from cash shortages and a currency they do not trust.
