Tinotenda Hove- Violence exploded at Wanderer Mine Site Number 4 in Shurugwi after artisanal miners allegedly set five excavators on fire at a mine owned by Chengxi Mine.

The incident, described as the worst clash yet between locals and Chinese miners, occurred this morning when security personnel employed by the foreign investor attempted to remove artisanal miners from the company’s gold claims.

According to sources, the confrontation quickly escalated into a fierce fight.

“The artisanal miners fought back and burnt five excavators. The situation was very tense,” a source said.

It is also alleged that security guards were badly beaten during the clashes.

“Some mine security personnel were severely assaulted and they have been admitted in hospital,” the source added.

The mine has been a hotspot for tensions between artisanal miners and the Chinese-owned company over access to gold-rich claims.

Police are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
