Mnangagwa Caps Thousands as Graduates Face Unemployment Crisis

Tinotenda Hove- President Emmerson Mnangagwa presided over the 20th graduation ceremony of Great Zimbabwe University in Masvingo, capping thousands of graduates at a time when unemployment and limited job opportunities remain major concerns for Zimbabweans.

Mnangagwa, who serves as Chancellor of all state universities, formally declared the congregation duly constituted at the university campus, paving the way for the graduation proceedings.

However, the ceremony unfolded against the backdrop of a difficult employment environment, raising questions about the opportunities awaiting the graduates as they leave university with qualifications and hopes of building successful careers.

While graduation ceremonies celebrate academic achievement and the investment students make in their education, obtaining a degree does not automatically translate into employment in Zimbabwe, where many qualified young people struggle to secure formal jobs.

The annual graduation season therefore presents a broader challenge for the government: ensuring that universities produce graduates who can find meaningful employment in an economy capable of absorbing their skills.
For the thousands capped at Great Zimbabwe University, the occasion marked the culmination of years of academic work. Yet the real test begins after graduation, as they navigate a labour market where qualifications alone may not guarantee financial independence.
The ceremony also puts the spotlight on the government’s responsibility to create an economic environment in which education leads to tangible opportunities, rather than leaving graduates facing prolonged job searches or seeking opportunities beyond Zimbabwe’s borders.
