By A Correspondent— Major Valley Farms, a mixed farming enterprise based in Gutu, Zimbabwe, has sparked interest among bird lovers and agricultural enthusiasts after releasing a statement highlighting the fascinating world of fancy pigeons.
In a post shared under the theme “Pigeon World,” the farm introduced two unique and historically bred pigeon varieties — the Frillback and the Modena — describing them as standout icons in the global pigeon community.
The farm noted that fancy pigeons have been selectively bred for centuries, resulting in striking physical traits and distinct personalities.
Among the breeds featured was the Frillback pigeon, known for its unusual feather structure. “That ‘perm’ is 100% natural,” the statement read, explaining that a dominant gene causes the bird’s wing feathers to curl upward into decorative “frills.”
Despite their ornate appearance, Major Valley Farms pointed out that Frillbacks are hardy birds. However, their curled feathers can present challenges. “Those curls make it tough to fly in the rain,” the farm added, highlighting a unique limitation of the breed.
The second breed showcased was the Modena pigeon, described as a bold and commanding presence in pigeon exhibitions. Recognisable by its upright posture and rounded chest, the Modena is often referred to as a “heavyweight” in the show world. “Check out that proud, upright stance,” the statement said, noting the bird’s distinctive “shippy” or boat-like body shape.
Major Valley Farms emphasized that these breeds are not only visually captivating but also represent the depth of pigeon genetics and careful breeding practices developed over generations.
Located in Gutu, the farm continues to diversify its operations, blending traditional agriculture with niche livestock such as rare pigeon breeds. The initiative has drawn attention from local communities and online audiences alike, particularly those interested in animal genetics and rare bird species.
With growing interest in pigeon keeping and bird breeding in Zimbabwe, Major Valley Farms’ showcase serves as both an educational insight and an invitation to explore the lesser-known side of farming.
