Tinotenda Hove- Masvingo is mourning the loss of Robert Mushonga, who made history as Gokomere High School’s first black headmaster.

Mushonga, 82, died early this morning after collapsing at his home in Rhodene. He was taken to Masvingo 24 Hour Clinic, where he was pronounced dead.

He led Gokomere from 1983 to 1993, taking over the school at a pivotal moment and steering it through a decade of growth.

Current head Emmanuel Muvengi said Mushonga’s tenure laid the foundation for much of what the school stands for today.

“He was the first black headmaster at Gokomere High School and served from 1983 to 1993. He played a pivotal role in the development of the school and left behind a rich legacy of academic excellence, discipline and dedicated service. His contribution to Gokomere and the country’s education sector will never be forgotten,” Muvengi said.

The school said funeral and burial arrangements will be communicated in due course.
