Tinotenda Hove- At least 21 people have been killed in a horror crash on the N1 highway in the Western Cape.

The fatal collision occurred around 11:30pm on Sunday on the stretch between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka and involved two minibus taxis and a station wagon.

The impact of the crash forced the closure of the N1 in both directions, with authorities urging motorists to stay away from the area.

Police have advised motorists to use an alternative route via Prince Albert Road Station, along the R407 to the N12, and then continue on the N12 towards Beaufort West.

Authorities have warned of major delays, calling on drivers to exercise extreme caution.

Emergency services and traffic officers are still at the scene, and motorists have been urged to obey instructions and avoid the closed section of the highway.

The cause of the accident is yet to be established.
