Tinotenda Hove- The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern warning to pedestrians who cross roads at unauthorised points in urban centres, cautioning that those who ignore designated crossing areas risk facing legal consequences.
Speaking to journalists at the Smart Traffic Management System Command Centre on Wednesday, ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police would enforce the law against pedestrians who flout road safety regulations.
“We want people to cross at designated points and the laws are there to be applied on those not adhering to this requirement,” Nyathi said.
His remarks came during a media awareness visit organised to demonstrate the operations of the Smart Traffic Management System and its potential role in monitoring traffic and enforcing road rules.
The system is expected to support efforts to improve road discipline and promote compliance with traffic regulations, particularly in central business districts where heavy pedestrian movement often coincides with busy vehicle traffic.
Police are urging pedestrians to take responsibility for their safety by using approved crossing points, while warning that disregarding traffic rules could result in legal action.
