Tinotenda Hove- President Emmerson Mnangagwa has taken aim at Zimbabwe’s opposition parties, declaring them to be in disarray and urging their members to abandon them and join the ruling Zanu PF.

Addressing delegates at the official opening of Zanu PF’s 23rd National People’s Conference in Chinhoyi on Friday, Mnangagwa portrayed the opposition as politically weakened and incapable of offering a meaningful alternative to Zimbabweans.

“Opposition parties are in disarray and lack an agenda for the people,” Mnangagwa said, urging their members to join Zanu PF.
His remarks appeared to frame the difficulties facing opposition parties as an opportunity for the ruling party to attract new members and strengthen its political position.

Mnangagwa’s appeal comes at a time when Zimbabwe’s opposition movement has faced internal divisions and organisational challenges, raising questions about its ability to mount an effective challenge to Zanu PF.

Rather than focusing solely on the challenges confronting his own administration, the President used the conference platform to encourage opposition supporters to cross over to the ruling party.

The remarks also reflected Zanu PF’s confidence in its political standing, with Mnangagwa presenting the opposition as lacking a coherent agenda for addressing the concerns of ordinary citizens.

However, his assessment represents the ruling party’s position and does not necessarily mean Zimbabweans have abandoned the demand for alternative political leadership.

The President’s comments come as Zanu PF seeks to consolidate its support base, while the future of opposition politics, political competition and democratic accountability remain important issues in Zimbabwe.
By urging opposition members to join Zanu PF, Mnangagwa has turned the ruling party’s conference into an opportunity to court supporters of rival political movements, reinforcing the increasingly competitive struggle over the future of Zimbabwe’s political landscape.
