Tinotenda Hove- Businessman-turned-politician Kudakwashe Tagwirei has officially entered government as Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion, raising questions about the direction of Zimbabwe’s investment policy and the growing influence of individuals closely associated with President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Tagwirei was sworn into office by Mnangagwa at State House in Harare on Monday morning, formally assuming responsibility for attracting investment and driving the country’s economic development agenda.
“My role is to bring capital into Zimbabwe,” Tagwirei said after the swearing-in ceremony.
His appointment comes as the government continues to promote its Vision 2030 ambitions, despite persistent economic challenges facing ordinary Zimbabweans.
Tagwirei is widely viewed as one of Mnangagwa’s closest business allies, earning him a reputation as the President’s blue-eyed boy. His elevation to a key economic portfolio places a businessman with longstanding links to the ruling establishment at the centre of government’s investment drive.
While Tagwirei has pledged to bring capital into the country, the key question is whether his appointment will translate into tangible economic benefits for struggling citizens or primarily strengthen the influence of politically connected business interests.
Zimbabweans will be watching to see whether the new minister can attract meaningful investment, create jobs and improve living standards, rather than simply add another prominent name to Mnangagwa’s government.
