Chitungwiza- St Mary’s legislator, Brighton Mazhindu has called on government to urgently implement strong road safety measures such as speed reduction systems, visible road signs, and physical barriers where necessary as a way of reducing road carnage.

Accident wreckage

The development follows the death of 17 people this morning near Manyame bridge along Seke road in Chitungwiza. 15 people who were in a kombi died including 2 other pedestrians after a haulage truck veered off the road and encroached into the oncoming traffic lane, dragging and crushing the kombi which was enroute to St Mary’s from town.

Mazhindu called on motorists to exercise discipline, care, and responsibility while driving, understanding that once lost, lives cannot be replaced.

He said:

“Motorists must understand thay they are carrying lives—people who are loved, needed, and irreplaceable. I strongly condemn reckless driving, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and any form of behaviour that endangers lives”

We publish below the full text of the statement from Mazhindu:

The Office of Honourable Brighton Mazhindu, Member of Parliament for St Mary’s, wishes to express deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences following the tragic accident that occurred at Manyame Bridge along Seke Road.

Seventeen lives were lost when a haulage truck encroached into the lane of a commuter omnibus travelling from the City Centre to St Mary’s. Among the deceased were breadwinners—men and women who carried the hopes of their families.

I am devastated by this great loss and mourn with the affected families during this painful time.

This incident marks the third serious road accident on Seke Road in the past seven days, a worrying trend that cannot be ignored.

I am urging the Government, particularly the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, to urgently implement strong road safety measures such as speed reduction systems, visible road signs, and physical barriers where necessary.

I am also calling on all motorists to exercise discipline, care, and responsibility while driving. Motorists must understand that they are carrying lives—people who are loved, needed, and irreplaceable.

I strongly condemn reckless driving, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and any form of behaviour that endangers others on the road.

We must all do better to protect life. I remain committed to fighting for the safety and wellbeing of the people of St Mary’s.

We will continue to engage the relevant authorities to ensure that such tragedies are not repeated.
