Tinotenda Hove – ZVISHAVANE – Grief has gripped the town of Zvishavane following the tragic and unexpected death of Grace, a well-known employee at Pote Supermarket.
According to local news outlet Zvishavane 24/7, Grace passed away in her sleep earlier this week. Initial reports indicate that she may have succumbed to oxygen deprivation caused by the use of a traditional charcoal brazier, known locally as a “mbaura,” which she reportedly used to keep warm overnight.
Mbauras, though widely used in Zimbabwean households during the cold season, can be deadly when operated in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces. The charcoal produces carbon monoxide—an invisible, odourless gas that can silently lead to suffocation.
Grace’s sudden passing has left her colleagues and the community in deep shock. Described as hardworking, kind-hearted, and dependable, she was a familiar and beloved figure at the supermarket.
Tributes have poured in on social media, with many mourning her loss and sending messages of support to her family.
“Such a heartbreaking loss. She was always smiling and ready to help,” one colleague posted. “May her soul rest in peace.”
Authorities have since reminded the public about the dangers of using open braziers indoors without proper ventilation. They strongly urge residents to prioritize safety when heating their homes, especially during winter.
